Wow! So I saw the news about former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro being sent to prison, and I wondered… how much does it cost to go to Brazil these days?
So I put in two dates in March, and I gasped at the results.
I bought a pair of glasses at Warby Parker in October, and the glasses were more than the round trip to South America– even if you include the $81 visa fee.
Seriously, I spent about $1100 to fly to Rio on Varig in 1982, and 43 years later it’s less than half the price. Granted, that was during Carnival in 1982, but my slightly off-peak flight in 2026 is a crazy, amazing bargain.
I think my flights in 1983 and 1985 were also 80-100% higher than my ticket for March. How often do you gasp at the affordability of an intercontinental round trip air fare? That’s what happened to me, and when it did, I pulled the trigger.
