About a year ago, I started working across the street from Lincoln Park, and noticed some very bold and interesting statues in the park. Specifically, the Goethe, Alexander Hamilton, and Altgeld statues caught my attention.
These are some impressive statues. Goethe is clothed only by a loincloth and has a large hunting bird. This statue was dedicated in 1913. It was struck by lightning and damaged in 1957. It’s been restored in the past dozen years and looks great.
Across the street is a golden Alexander Hamilton statue. As the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, maybe it’s appropriate to be one of the few golden statues in Chicago. The Statue of the Republic– a replica of the iconic statue at the 1893 World’s Fair– is the only other gold-clad statue I know of in the city.
And the Altgeld statue is notable for its impressionistic attention to Altgeld’s rise to become mayor of Chicago and his defense of immigrants.
So I started filming short video clips of as many statues as I could find, and compiled 70 of them in this video. Let me know what you think in the comments.
